How to remove objects from photos offline, for free
Paint over what you don't want, click Remove, and the AI fills the area as if it was never there. On your own computer, without uploading the photo and without limits. Updated October 21, 2026.

Step by step
- Install Kokon (Windows, macOS or Linux) and let it set up the model the first time.
- Drop your photo into the window, or paste it.
- Click Paint area and brush over the object. Go a little past its edges, and include its shadow or reflection.
- Choose Remove and press Enter. You don't need to describe the background: the model reads the rest of the photo.
- Compare with the slider. Not perfect? Press Regenerate for another try, or paint a bit wider. Every attempt is kept as a version.
Everything outside the brush stays exactly as it was, pixel for pixel. That's what makes painting more reliable than describing where the object is.
Tips for clean results
- Shadows and reflections: paint them too, or they stay behind.
- Several objects: paint them all in one go.
- Lots of people or a whole crowd: skip the brush and write the edit instead, for example "Remove all the people from the beach".
- Replace instead of remove: choose Replace and say what should be there ("a wooden bench"), or Add to put something new in the painted area.
- Big photos: Kokon edits large images at a size your GPU can handle and keeps the untouched pixels at full resolution.
Why offline?
Phone erasers and online tools are quick, but they upload your photo, some add limits or a watermark, and the better ones need a subscription. Kokon runs on your own graphics card: the photo stays on your computer, there is no limit, and it's free and open source. It works without internet once the model is downloaded.
What you need
| Works | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Windows or Linux + NVIDIA | 12 GB of VRAM (8 GB in beta) | 16 GB or more |
| Windows or Linux + AMD / Intel Arc | 12 GB of VRAM, Vulkan (beta) | 16 GB or more |
| Mac | Apple Silicon, 16 GB, macOS 15 (slow) | 32 GB or more, Pro/Max/Ultra chip |
| Disk | 15 GB free | 25 GB free |
Speed with the default model: on an RTX 5070 Ti, about 24 seconds for an edit at 1.5K and about 36 seconds for a new image at native 2K. 12 GB cards are a little slower, 8 GB cards take 1 to 2 minutes per edit, and an M2 Pro Mac takes about 4 minutes per image.
Questions

Is it free?
Yes. Kokon is free and open source, with no limits or watermark. The images are for non-commercial use because of the model's license.
Can it remove people from photos?
